Scope: Official Pikachu designs in games and animation

Quick answer

Standard Pikachu has a yellow lightning-bolt tail with brown coloring at its base, not a black tip. The common black-tip memory is easy to reinforce because Pikachu has black ear tips, Pichu has a black tail, some special costume designs differ, and unofficial art often changes the markings.

The official tail design

Standard Pikachu artwork uses a yellow lightning-bolt tail with a brown patch at the base. It does not have a black tip. The official Pokédex artwork is the clearest reference because it shows the model without animation lighting, motion blur or a costume.

Why people remember black

Pikachu’s ears end in black, while Pichu’s tail is dark. Those nearby designs can blend together in memory. Animation shadows, the metallic effect used during Iron Tail, costumes and unofficial merchandise can also create images that differ from the standard model. These are plausible sources of confusion, not proof that every person formed the memory in the same way.

Female and special variants

From Generation IV onward, a female Pikachu is shown with a heart-shaped notch at the end of the tail. That is a shape difference, not a black marking. Special event and costume Pikachu can add clothing or accessories, but they do not rewrite the normal Pokédex design.
