ACE COMBAT 8 Online: Modes, Crossplay and Cross-Save
ACE COMBAT ONLINE modes, the 100-player Air Base, Threat Level, crossplay and cross-save status, campaign co-op, and one crossplay trap players report.
Applies to: ACE COMBAT ONLINE: its modes, the Air Base capacity, Threat Level, and the crossplay, cross-save and campaign co-op questions, checked against the publisher's FAQ on October 15, 2026
Quick answer
ACE COMBAT 8's online mode is ACE COMBAT ONLINE, described by the publisher as separate from the campaign with its own progression and its own save file, and built on two named modes — Co-Op Assault and Co-Op Warfare, both two teams of four — inside an Air Base that holds up to 100 players. Crossplay is supported, per the store listing's cross-platform multiplayer category; cross-save is reported as not supported, but that answer rests on a third-party transcription of a Japanese-language specification page rather than an English first-party statement. Campaign co-op is not offered, a conclusion drawn from the official separation of campaign and online rather than from a sentence saying so. One player report is worth knowing before you touch the settings: a thread titled "turning OFF crossplay breaks multiplayer entirely" reports that disabling it left multiplayer unusable, and the publisher's FAQ says nothing about what that option does.

At a glance
ACE COMBAT 8 has a separate online mode called ACE COMBAT ONLINE. The publisher describes it as having its own progression and its own save file, kept apart from the campaign, and the store page sells the campaign and the online modes under different categories. Its two named modes are Co-Op Assault and Co-Op Warfare, and the shared Air Base holds up to 100 players.
On the three questions people reach this topic with: crossplay is supported, cross-save is reported as not supported but that answer comes from third-party material rather than an English first-party statement, and the campaign has no co-op mode. One trap is worth knowing before you touch the settings: a player thread reports that switching crossplay off leaves online play effectively unusable, and no publisher material describes what happens when you disable it.
How online relates to the campaign
The publisher's FAQ describes ACE COMBAT ONLINE as a place to team up, take on missions and build a mercenary reputation, and states plainly that it has its own progression and its own save file, separate from the campaign. The store description calls it the first online lobby in the series, where you explore an air base as a customised avatar.
The store listing keeps the two apart as well: single-player, multi-player, PvP, online PvP, co-op and online co-op are listed as separate categories rather than as one blended feature set.
Two practical consequences follow from that separation. Progress made online does not move your campaign forward, and campaign progress does not carry into online matches. And when the store page says co-op, it is describing the online modes below, not a second player joining your campaign.
Modes and the Air Base
The publisher's FAQ names two core modes and mentions limited-time special missions alongside them. Both core modes are built on two teams of four, and both sit inside the same online hub.
| Mode | Format | What the two teams do |
|---|---|---|
| Co-Op Assault | Player versus environment, two teams of four | Take on the environment and compete for the higher score |
| Co-Op Warfare | Player versus player versus environment, two teams of four | Fight each other with non-player forces on land, at sea and in the air also in play |
| Special missions | Time-limited events | Listed by the publisher alongside the two core modes, without a fixed schedule |
The Air Base holds up to 100 players in the same space, and that figure is about the shared lobby rather than about any single match. The modes themselves are built on four-versus-four, so reading 100 as "100 aircraft in one battle" is a misreading of what the FAQ is counting.
Threat Level
The FAQ also explains the scoring pressure that gives online matches their shape. Scoring without being shot down raises your threat level. A higher threat level increases the value of the kills you take, and it increases the value your opponents collect when they shoot you down — the two rise together, so a high threat level is not a one-way advantage. A three-star threat is labelled Ace.
That is the level of detail the publisher gives. The numeric steps between levels, the exact multipliers and the full rule set are not published, so this page does not list figures.
Crossplay, cross-save and campaign co-op
These arrive as one question in most searches — can I play this with someone else — but they are three different questions with three different answers and three different evidence levels.
| Question | Answer | What the answer rests on |
|---|---|---|
| Can I play with people on other platforms? | Yes — crossplay is supported | A publisher-side statement: the store listing carries a cross-platform multiplayer category |
| Does my progress follow me to another platform? | Reported as no | Third-party transcription of a Japanese-language official specification page; no English first-party text states it |
| Can I play the campaign with a friend? | Not offered | A conclusion drawn from the official separation of campaign and online, not from a sentence saying so |
On crossplay, the supporting statement is the store category, which is publisher-side. Which platforms share a matchmaking pool is reported by a third-party wiki as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series alongside PC; that platform list is third-party and is not repeated here as though it were official.
On cross-save, the reported answer is no, and the caveat matters more than the answer. The position is recorded by third parties as a transcription of a Japanese-language specification page. The English FAQ checked for this page describes progression and saves as belonging to the online mode and kept apart from the campaign, and does not address moving a save between platforms at all. Treat "no cross-save" as the reported position rather than as an English first-party statement.
On campaign co-op, the conclusion follows from the official separation. The publisher describes the online mode as separate with its own progress and save, no publisher material checked here describes two players flying the campaign together, and the store listing carries single-player as a category of its own. This page records campaign co-op as not offered, and notes that no announcement states it in those words.
What the publisher says about payments
The FAQ takes a direct position on the parts of monetisation players ask about most. There are no consumables planned at present, there are no paid loot boxes and no randomised paid rewards, and the contents of what you buy can be seen before you buy it.
Players still question the mode's economy. One discussion thread is titled "What's the point of AC:Online? Blatant Pay To Win?", and another asks the developers to remove a specific online mode from the daily challenges and widen the player-versus-environment options. Those threads are player reports about design and progression pace, not claims about purchasable random rewards, and they are background rather than a counter-statement to the FAQ. The publisher's stated position governs what can be bought; the threads tell you how the progression feels to some of the people playing it.
The ACE PASS system, including its premium tiers, is a purchasing topic rather than an online-play topic and is covered on the price and editions page.
Matchmaking, and the crossplay trap
The publisher has acknowledged that finding matches is not always quick. An update notice dated October 9, 2026 states that in some environments mission matchmaking can be harder to establish than expected, and attributes part of that to players connecting from environments that do not meet the listed system requirements. The same notice states that ACE COMBAT ONLINE was developed and tested for the environments named in those requirements, and asks players to run Windows 11 — the only supported operating system — and to install the game on an SSD, noting that hard drives affect loading and overall stability. The requirement details themselves are on the PC system requirements page.
Separately, one player-side setting has a consequence you would not guess from the menus. A discussion thread is titled "turning OFF crossplay breaks multiplayer entirely", reporting that disabling crossplay leaves multiplayer effectively unusable for that player. This is a player report: we have not tested it, we do not know the mechanism behind it, and the publisher's FAQ does not describe what disabling the crossplay option does to matchmaking. If you are troubleshooting a matchmaking problem, note that nobody official has said turning crossplay off will help.
If you are seeing an error code rather than a slow matchmaking queue, the code players report most often in this mode has its own section on the crash and error code page. Platform availability, including Linux, is a different question again and is covered on the platform availability page.
What is not published
- Cross-save in first-party English text. The reported answer is no, sourced from third-party transcription rather than an English publisher statement.
- Threat Level figures. The mechanic is described qualitatively; the numbers behind it are not published.
- Online earnings. No formula or rate for what the online modes pay is given in the material checked here.
- The crossplay setting's actual effect. The FAQ does not state what disabling crossplay does to matchmaking, and the publisher has not commented on the player report.
Several questions that bring people to this topic are also unanswered by any publisher material checked here: where the player level is displayed, how a new class is created, how universal blueprints are applied, whether a teammate's kills award you points, and how to leave the online mode. This page records those as unanswered rather than filling them in from forum posts or from other guide sites.

- Bandai Namco Entertainment — update notice, October 9, 2026 — source for the official statement on matchmaking difficulty, the link drawn between unsupported environments and matchmaking, the Windows 11 requirement and the SSD guidance.
- Steam Discussions — ACE COMBAT 8 — the board the player thread titles quoted above are taken from: "turning OFF crossplay breaks multiplayer entirely", "What's the point of AC:Online? Blatant Pay To Win?" and the request to remove an online mode from the daily challenges. These are player posts, not publisher statements, and the crossplay behaviour reported in the first of them was not tested by this page.
- PCGamingWiki — ACE COMBAT 8 — third-party wiki, cited for the claim that crossplay covers PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series alongside PC. It is not a publisher statement and is labelled as third-party above.
- Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe — support FAQ entry — an official support-channel document used to confirm the season pass structure referenced in the payments section. The purchasing detail itself is kept on the price and editions page rather than repeated here.
- Reported transcription of a Japanese-language official specification page — recorded third-party material only, and the sole basis for the "no cross-save" line above. It is not an English publisher statement and the transcription could not be checked against a first-party English page.
Checked on October 15, 2026. Mode names, formats, the Air Base capacity, the Threat Level mechanic and the payment statements are taken from the publisher's FAQ and kept to what that document says; where it stops short of numbers, this page stops too. The cross-save answer is marked as third-party throughout because it is. The matchmaking paragraph reports an official acknowledgement, while the crossplay behaviour is kept in a separate paragraph and marked as a player report that we did not reproduce. Thread titles are quoted so you can find them, not because a thread title settles a technical question. Platform availability and PC requirements are deliberately left to their own pages rather than restated here.
Checked on October 15, 2026 against the Steam store listing and the Steam Web API app-details endpoint for ACE COMBAT 8, the publisher's own Steam announcements, and the Steam achievements API. Requirement figures, the DRM notice and the difficulty descriptions are quoted from official sources rather than paraphrased. Where a detail comes from a third-party wiki or from a player post rather than from Bandai Namco Entertainment, it is labelled as exactly that. Anything the publisher has not stated is written as unconfirmed rather than guessed.
Not independently play-tested. This is not a claim that every platform or game version was tested. Source review: Oct 15, 2026.
