Tomb Raider Survivor trilogy order and version guide

Play Tomb Raider (2013), Rise and Shadow in the correct order and identify their definitive editions.

Scope: Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Quick answer

Play Tomb Raider (2013) first, Rise of the Tomb Raider second and Shadow of the Tomb Raider third. This is both release order and the main narrative order. Definitive and anniversary-labelled editions bundle or enhance the same three core games; they do not add a fourth entry.

Correct play order

  1. Tomb Raider (2013): Lara’s first expedition in this continuity strands the Endurance crew on Yamatai.
  2. Rise of the Tomb Raider: Lara pursues evidence connected to immortality while Trinity becomes a central threat.
  3. Shadow of the Tomb Raider: the trilogy’s third main campaign continues Lara and Jonah’s story.

This is both the release order and the clearest narrative order. Playing Rise or Shadow first is possible mechanically, but it removes context for Lara, Jonah and Trinity.

Which editions contain the same core games?

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is an enhanced console edition of the 2013 game. Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration packages Rise with additional content. Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition packages Shadow and its downloadable content. The Definitive Survivor Trilogy bundles the three games; it is not a separate fourth story.

What comes after the trilogy?

Netflix’s The Legend of Lara Croft is officially positioned after the Survivor trilogy. Upcoming games use a current Lara presentation, but their final relationship to every past event should be described only as official material confirms it. Use the animation timeline for the immediate follow-up.
