Rust System Requirements: Can Your PC or Mac Run It?
Compare your Windows PC or Mac with Rust’s current Steam requirements, storage guidance, and platform limitations before buying or installing.
Applies to: Rust on Steam · Windows and macOS requirements listed October 22, 2026
Quick answer
For Windows, Steam currently lists Windows 11 64-bit, 12 GB RAM, 45 GB of storage, and at least a Ryzen 5 1400 or Core i5-6600 with an RX 470, GTX 1060, or Intel Arc A580. The recommended tier raises this to 16 GB RAM, a Ryzen 7 3700X or Core i7-6700K, and an RX 6600 XT, RTX 3060, or Arc B580; an SSD is required at the recommended tier. For macOS, Steam lists Monterey 12, an Apple M1, 12 GB RAM, and 45 GB as the minimum.

Windows requirements
Use the current Steam listing as the purchase check. Meeting the minimum means your hardware matches the published floor; it is not a promise of a particular frame rate on every server.
| Part | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 11 64-bit | Windows 11 64-bit |
| Processor | AMD Ryzen 5 1400 or Intel Core i5-6600 | AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or Intel Core i7-6700K |
| Memory | 12 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | AMD Radeon RX 470, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060, or Intel Arc A580 | AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, or Intel Arc B580 |
| DirectX | Version 11 | Version 12 |
| Storage | 45 GB; SSD highly recommended | 45 GB; SSD required |
| Network | Broadband internet | Broadband internet |
A May 2026 Facepunch notice discussed Windows 10 version 21H1 as the compatibility floor for an ongoing Unity 6 migration. Steam’s current customer-facing requirements are stricter and list Windows 11 for both Windows tiers, so use the Steam table when deciding whether to buy or install now.
macOS requirements
| Part | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | macOS Monterey 12 | macOS Monterey 12 |
| Processor and graphics | Apple M1 | Apple M1 Pro, Max, or Ultra |
| Memory | 12 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Storage | 45 GB | 45 GB |
| Network | Broadband internet | Broadband internet |
The Steam listing names Apple silicon for both tiers. It does not list an Intel Mac configuration, so this page does not infer support for Intel Macs.
Check your computer before buying
- Confirm the operating system and whether the processor is 64-bit.
- Compare the exact CPU model—not only its clock speed—with the listed tier.
- Check installed RAM. Shared memory on an integrated GPU does not replace the system-memory requirement.
- Identify the exact desktop or laptop GPU. A laptop GPU with a similar name may run at a different power limit from its desktop counterpart.
- Keep more than 45 GB free so Steam has room for downloads, updates, and temporary files.
If one component falls below the published minimum, there is no source-backed basis for promising that lowering graphics settings will make the game reliable. Steam’s refund rules and current product page are safer references than an estimated FPS calculator.
Storage and SSD guidance
Both Steam tiers list 45 GB of available space. The minimum tier says an SSD is highly recommended because a hard drive can cause longer loading, while the recommended tier explicitly requires an SSD. The game also requires broadband internet because Rust is built around online servers.
Steam currently marks the Steam Deck and SteamOS compatibility test as unsupported because the anti-cheat configuration is not enabled for that environment. This status can change independently of the Windows and macOS requirements, so check the current Steam compatibility panel before relying on a handheld setup.
What these requirements cannot predict
- They do not guarantee a fixed frame rate or eliminate stutter.
- Server population, map size, dense player bases, graphics settings, background applications, cooling, and laptop power limits can change performance.
- Modded servers may be heavier than the official baseline.
- Console Edition and Rust Mobile are separate products; their requirements do not belong in this Steam PC and Mac table.
