Where to catch Pikachu in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

Find Pikachu in Viridian Forest or the Power Plant and choose between an early low-rate encounter and a stronger later catch.

Scope: Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen wild encounters

Quick answer

The earliest place to catch Pikachu is Viridian Forest, where it is a rare encounter at low levels. Later, Pikachu is substantially more common at the Power Plant and appears at higher levels. Use Viridian Forest if you want Pikachu before Misty; use the Power Plant if you prefer a faster late-game search.

Viridian Forest

Viridian Forest is the first place to catch Pikachu in both Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. Encounter tables list Pikachu at levels 3–5 with a 5% appearance rate. The rate is low, but this route lets you add Pikachu before the Pewter City and Cerulean City stages of the story.

Power Plant

The Power Plant becomes the better hunting location later. Pikachu appears there at levels 22–26 with a combined 25% encounter rate in the FireRed and LeafGreen tables. Bring a Pokémon that can weaken it without knocking it out and expect Static to cause paralysis when using contact moves.

Which location to use

Choose Viridian Forest when early access matters more than encounter speed. Choose the Power Plant when you want a higher-level Pikachu with a much better encounter rate. If the goal is Raichu, read the evolution timing guide before using a Thunder Stone.
