ACE COMBAT 8 Story and Setting: Do You Need Ace Combat 7 First?
Where and when ACE COMBAT 8 is set, what the Wings of Theve legend really is, who Joker Flight are, and what the publisher has not published.
Applies to: The published setting, premise and character roster of ACE COMBAT 8, checked against the publisher's own game page, walkthrough page and announcements on October 15, 2026
Quick answer
ACE COMBAT 8 is set in Strangereal in July 2029, when the Federation of Central Usea has fallen under a lightning invasion by the Republic of Sotoa; the player is pulled from a rescue boat aboard the carrier Endurance and given the name "Wings of Theve", a legendary ace the publisher states was never real. The publisher's character announcement describes the pilot who carries that name as the Commander leading Joker Flight, selected for the "manufactured ace project" because of his evasive flying, alongside Baxter, Tasha and Coster. Later campaign events, the ending, character ages and the voice cast are not published, and the publisher has issued no statement about whether earlier games need to be played first — no character from ACE COMBAT 7 appears in the published roster.

At a glance
ACE COMBAT 8 is set in Strangereal, the fictional world the series has used for decades, in 2029. The publisher's own site states the premise in a few lines: a fighter pilot is pulled from a rescue boat by an outdated carrier, the Endurance; the Federation of Central Usea has fallen under a lightning invasion by the Republic of Sotoa; and on that ship the player is given a single name, "Wings of Theve" — a legendary ace who, the site says plainly, was not real.
That is the whole of the officially published premise. The publisher describes the campaign as told in first person for the first time in the series, flying with Joker Flight, which it calls your new squadron. What happens later in the campaign, how it ends, and who built the legend are not published, and this page does not fill those gaps from anywhere else.
Spoiler note
This page uses only material the publisher has published: the official game page, the official walkthrough page, the Steam store description, and the publisher's own announcements. It names the premise as those sources state it on their face, which the official site and store listing present as the setup rather than as a twist. It does not retell later campaign events, any ending, or any plot point that appears only in third-party summaries or player threads.
Where and when the story is set
Everything in this section is quoted from Bandai Namco Entertainment's own game page. The year and both nations were confirmed against the publisher's walkthrough page as well, which phrases the same conflict independently.
| Item | Publisher's wording |
|---|---|
| Date | "July 2029" |
| World | Strangereal — described by the publisher as taking "real-world–inspired geography" and blending it with "fictional history including impossible superweapons and dramatic conflicts between nations" |
| The attacking state | "the Republic of Sotoa" |
| The defending state | "the Federation of Central Usea (FCU)" |
| Situation | "Most of the nation is occupied, the military is scattered, and the Endurance is just one fragment of what remains." |
| The player's position | A fighter pilot "adrift at sea in a rescue boat" until the carrier Endurance pulls you aboard |
| Objective | To "push back the Sotoan incursion" and "reclaim your lost homeland" |
The word Usea is not only a setting detail: it also appears inside the achievement list, where one entry is named "Freeing Usea". The capital, Theve, is named in the same official paragraph that gives the player the "Wings of Theve" name.
What "Wings of Theve" actually is
The publisher is unusually direct about this, and it is worth quoting rather than summarising. From the official game page:
The September 4, 2026 character announcement fills in the same point from the other direction. It describes the leader of Joker Flight as a Commander-rank officer who "was given the single sign 'Wings of Theve' — a legendary ace, and a symbol of hope for the capital of FCU. However, that legend was not real." The same announcement states that, because of "his exceptional piloting skills, especially his masterful evasive maneuvers", he "was selected for the manufactured ace project".
The official story trailer announcement frames it in one line as well: "Lies, conspiracies, and gossip. They make up the dense fog that obscures what really going down in this war. The legendary ace – Wings – is no different."
What those sources confirm is that the legend is manufactured and that the pilot was selected for a project that built it. What they do not say is who ordered the project, who wrote the story, or what the player is expected to do about it. That is left open rather than inferred here.
Joker Flight, Queen Flight and the Endurance
The publisher's September 4, 2026 character announcement introduces "the pilots of Joker Flight and the crew of the FCU Endurance: pilots, officers, and survivors who make up the last fighting force of a nation on the brink." The entries below are that announcement's own descriptions, condensed rather than extended. Full pages exist for Tasha and for Joker Flight as a unit.
| Character | Published details |
|---|---|
| Commander, leader of Joker Flight | Given the sign "Wings of Theve"; selected for the "manufactured ace project" for his evasive flying; in his downtime "an inveterate gambler" who sometimes failed to pay his debts but stayed well liked for "his sociable charm and charisma". The announcement does not print his name. |
| Baxter | Lieutenant Commander, Joker Flight No. 2, "the calm hand that holds the rest of them together"; a former university lecturer who has never revealed his field; Tasha calls him "Teach", and the two study together in the mess. |
| Tasha | Ensign, Joker Flight No. 3; originally a star pilot in Yuktobania's acrobatic team Zvezda; aboard the Endurance to shoot publicity footage when war broke out, and stayed on the ship. |
| Coster | Lieutenant Junior Grade, Joker Flight No. 4; a skilled wingman who keeps up with Tasha's extreme manoeuvres and provides effective cover; a rock music fan who brings a compact music player into the cockpit. |
| Queen Flight's leader | Lieutenant Commander and leader of Queen Flight, "the carrier's other flight"; cool and collected, focused on protecting pilots in both flights; wears bandages constantly but never lets the strain show. |
The publisher's music announcement of September 30, 2026 adds one further name: it refers to "Tasha Severskaya, Joker Flight's third pilot". The same announcement describes musicianship as a story device rather than decoration, saying the game's story "explores how even in war, music acts as a point of connection between comrades, as a signal of national identity and purpose, or as the voices of those who sacrificed themselves".
What the official screenshots show
Some setting detail appears only on screen in the publisher's own store screenshots, not in any written announcement. These are recorded here as what the official screenshots show, which is a weaker claim than a published character file, and they are listed that way deliberately.
- The carrier's name, ENDURANCE, is printed in the heads-up display of a cockpit shot.
- A hangar sortie screen lists the player's flight under the callsigns REX, BAXTER, TASHA and COSTER, with aircraft types beside each.
- An enemy unit card identifies a hostile squadron as the LUX LUNAE 55th UNIT, with the unit line "1st Special Operations Wing, 11th Tactical Squadron".
- A communications overlay names a second friendly flight's pilot as C. Everson, "Queen Flight, No. 4".
Two things follow from those screenshots and one does not. They confirm that a second flight, Queen Flight, flies alongside Joker Flight, and that the opposing force includes a named squadron with a formal unit designation. They do not amount to a published roster for either side — the enemy squadron appears only as an in-game card, and no announcement describes it.
Strangereal, and whether you need the earlier games
Strangereal is a shared setting rather than a fresh one. The publisher's walkthrough page defines it as taking "real-world–inspired geography" and blending it with "fictional history including impossible superweapons and dramatic conflicts between nations". Nations named in official ACE COMBAT 8 material include the FCU and the Republic of Sotoa as the two sides of the 2029 conflict, and Yuktobania as the country Tasha flew for before the war.
On the question of prerequisites, the publisher has not published a statement about whether earlier games should be played first. What the official material does show is that this campaign is built around a new player pilot, a new squadron and a new 2029 conflict, and that the published character announcement names no characters carried over from ACE COMBAT 7. ACE COMBAT 7's own story and cast are a separate game; this page does not present them as ACE COMBAT 8 material.
What the publisher has not published
The gaps are as much a part of an accurate answer as the facts, and these are the ones this check confirmed as absent.
- Later campaign events and the ending. No publisher material checked here describes them. Third-party plot summaries exist and are deliberately not used: they are not a publisher source, and reproducing them would break the spoiler boundary this page holds.
- Who created the legend, and why. The announcement says the pilot was selected for the "manufactured ace project" and that the legend was not real. It does not name who ran the project.
- Any romantic storyline. Nothing in the official material describes one, despite the question being a common search.
- A role for Osea, or for other series nations beyond those named. No publisher statement checked here places them in this story.
- Character ages and the voice cast. The character announcement gives ranks and roles, not ages, and names no performers. The one performer connection published is that violinist Lindsey Stirling appears in a music video dressed as Tasha, which is a promotional appearance and not a casting announcement.
The story's mission structure is covered elsewhere: the campaign runs to 30 missions and mission 25 carries two separate completion entries, as recorded on the mission 25 page.

The setting facts above are quoted from Bandai Namco Entertainment's own pages and announcements, each dated in the body. The callsigns, the carrier name on the HUD, the enemy squadron designation and the Queen Flight pilot name come from the publisher's official store screenshots and are labelled as what those screenshots show rather than as published character files. Third-party plot summaries were not used, so no later story event and no ending appears here. Where the publisher has been silent — the origin of the legend, ages, the voice cast, any romantic thread, a role for Osea — this page says so instead of supplying a plausible answer. Requirement figures, the DRM notice and the difficulty descriptions are quoted from official sources rather than paraphrased. Where a detail comes from a third-party wiki or from a player post rather than from Bandai Namco Entertainment, it is labelled as exactly that.
