Tomb Raider I–III Remastered controls and save system explained
Choose tank or modern controls, use manual saves safely and understand restart and quick-save options.
Scope: Tomb Raider I–III Remastered with official updates through March 2026
Quick answer
I–III Remastered lets players switch between tank and modern controls. Regular play uses manual save slots rather than automatic checkpoints, so keep more than one save and avoid overwriting during a fatal fall. The passport menu can restart the current level, and Update 3 added controller quick-save and reload hotkeys.

Tank controls or modern controls?
Tank controls turn Lara relative to her own facing direction and work with the original grid-based level design. They make measured run-ups and jumps predictable once learned. Modern controls move Lara relative to the camera and feel more familiar to many current players, but some classic jumps still benefit from understanding the underlying grid.
Try both in an early level before committing. The game allows you to change the scheme, and later official patches improved modern-control combat and camera behavior. Button prompts and exact bindings vary by platform.
Manual saves, restart level and safe habits
Regular play does not rely on a modern automatic checkpoint chain. Save manually and use several slots. Do not overwrite your only useful save while Lara is falling, trapped or too low on resources to recover. If your latest save is unusable, the passport menu includes a Restart Level option.
- Keep one save near the start of the current level.
- Use a second rotating save while exploring.
- Save before spending scarce resources or entering an unknown drop.
- Check the selected slot before confirming an overwrite.
Changes added by official updates
Update 3 added quick-save and reload hotkeys for controller players and improved modern-control combat. A March 2026 update added Challenge Mode and labels its saves with a skull icon; those saves otherwise behave like regular saves. These later features may be missing from an unpatched installation.
This page covers official behavior rather than third-party save downloads. A downloaded save can differ by platform, game update and file structure.
