Terraria beginner progression: what to do first
A stage-by-stage route from spawning to the Wall of Flesh, with the gear milestones that unlock each step.
Applies to: Pre-Hardmode on 1.4.5
Quick answer
Start by building a small house so the Guide can move in, then mine and explore until you can craft a first set of armour. Use Life Crystals to raise your health, and take on the Eye of Cthulhu once you have roughly 200 health and a few villagers. From there the pre-Hardmode route runs through your world’s evil biome boss, Skeletron and the Dungeon, the Jungle for Queen Bee, and finally the Underworld to summon the Wall of Flesh.

Your first hour
The opening of Terraria is not about combat. It is about turning a patch of dirt into somewhere you can craft, and the Guide is the character who tells you what you can make.
- Build a small enclosed room with background walls and a piece of furniture such as a table or chair. That is what lets the Guide move in and starts the steady trickle of NPCs.
- Chop trees for wood. Wooden armour, a wooden sword, a workbench and torches all come from it, and torches matter more than the sword.
- Make a workbench and a furnace. The furnace turns ore into bars, and without it nothing else on this list works.
- Explore the surface and shallow caves for chests before digging deep. Chests hand you weapons, accessories and potions far earlier than crafting will.
- Place torches as you go. Darkness is what kills new players, not the enemies in it.
Gear milestones
Pre-Hardmode gear follows an ore ladder, and each tier is gated behind the tool from the one before.
| Stage | Roughly what you are working toward | Unlocked by |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Wooden or cactus gear, a workbench, torches | Surface gathering |
| Early ore | Copper or tin tools, then iron or lead, then silver or tungsten, then gold or platinum | Mining, with a furnace to smelt |
| Health | Raising maximum health with Life Crystals found underground | Cave exploration |
| Evil biome tier | Demonite or Crimtane gear from your world’s evil biome boss | Defeating the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu |
| Hellstone | Hellstone bars and the gear made from them | Reaching the Underworld with a strong enough pickaxe |
Two practical notes. Your world has either Corruption or Crimson, never both as the primary evil, so the boss that gates this tier depends on your world. And Life Crystals are found underground rather than crafted — explore sideways as well as down.
Accessories matter as much as armour. Clouds in a Bottle, Hermes Boots and similar movement accessories change what terrain you can cross, which is often the real reason a boss feels impossible.
The boss route
Pre-Hardmode has a required spine and a set of optional fights around it.
| Order | Boss | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Eye of Cthulhu | The first real gear check, and Demonite or Crimtane access. |
| 2 | Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu | Your world’s evil biome boss. This unlocks the ore tier below Hellstone. |
| 3 | Skeletron | Opens the Dungeon, which is a major loot source. |
| 4 | Wall of Flesh | Ends pre-Hardmode and permanently starts Hardmode. |
Around that spine sit optional fights that are worth doing because of what they drop: Queen Bee in the Jungle, King Slime, and Deerclops in the snow. The boss order page lists every boss with its summon method.
Preparing for the Wall of Flesh
The Wall of Flesh is summoned in the Underworld and it is a point of no return — Hardmode starts the moment it dies, and cannot be undone without a third-party editor.
Before you summon it:
- Back up your world file. This is the single most useful thing you can do. See the save recovery page for where it lives.
- Build a long, flat runway in the Underworld. The fight is a chase across the terrain, and a prepared path is most of the difficulty.
- Stock potions and healing. The fight rewards sustained movement rather than burst damage.
- Expect the world to change straight afterwards. Read the early Hardmode checklist before you trigger it, not after.
The summon item is thrown into lava in the Underworld, and it requires the Guide to be alive. If the Guide is not present, nothing happens — which is a common first-attempt confusion.
What 1.4.5 changed for new players
1.4.5 did not rewrite the progression spine, but two changes affect the early game directly:
- Villagers can now arrive with no spare house. You can meet a new NPC before you have a room for them, but they leave by nightfall if you do not build one — so have the house ready. Details are on the NPC happiness page.
- Houses no longer require a solid, non-platform block. If you build on platforms, a house can now register where it previously would not.
1.4.5 also added more than 650 items and a new seed selection window, neither of which changes the route above but both of which change what you will find along the way.
