Terraria Shimmer and Pylons: how both systems work

Find the Aether, use Shimmer transmutations, and build a Pylon teleport network that actually connects.

Quick answer

Shimmer is a purple liquid found in the Aether, a small cave biome generated once per world in the same half of the map as the Jungle. Dropping items into it transmutes them, and a player who submerges falls through blocks until reaching open space. Pylons are bought from NPCs and let you teleport between them, but only when at least two housed NPCs live near the pylon at each end of the trip.

Finding Shimmer

Shimmer is a pale purple, pearlescent liquid, and there is only one natural source of it per world.

  • It sits in the Aether, a small biome that generates once, in the Underground or Cavern layer.
  • The Aether always generates in the same half of the map as the Jungle. If you know which side your Jungle is on, you know which half to search.
  • It is available at any point in the game — you do not need to reach Hardmode to find it.
  • The Aether is Desktop, Console and Mobile content. It does not exist on the old legacy console and 3DS versions.

The practical search method is to explore the Cavern layer on the Jungle side of your map and look for the distinctive purple glow. Because it is a single small biome, a wide sweep of that half of the world is faster than digging randomly.

What Shimmer does

Shimmer is a transformation pool. Drop the right item in and it comes back out as something else.

What Shimmer is used for
BehaviourDetail
De-craftingMost crafted items break back down into their crafting materials.
Item exchangeSome items convert into a different item. A few can only be obtained this way — Ambrosia is the standard example.
Player effectSubmerging your head applies the Shimmering debuff: you fall slowly and pass through blocks until you reach open space.
Critters and enemiesMost critters transform into Faelings or into items. Some enemies transform; some simply fade toward invisible.
ProjectilesSome projectiles bounce upward off the surface, including falling Fallen Stars.
Liquid interactionShimmer meeting another liquid produces Aetherium Block.

Two restrictions catch people out: you cannot scoop Shimmer with an Empty Bucket, and you cannot fish or use items while submerged in it. Shimmer can still be moved with pumps, which is how players relocate a pool to their base.

A few notable conversions, including the ones people search for most:

Once the Moon Lord is down, the Bottomless Shimmer Bucket gives you an unlimited supply, which turns Shimmer into something you can use at base rather than travel to.

Pylon types

Pylons are teleport anchors. There are eleven types, and which one you can buy depends on where you are standing when you open the shop.

Pylon rules

The buying rules and the teleporting rules are different, and mixing them up is the usual source of confusion.

Pylon requirements
RuleDetail
BuyingFrom a vendor-type NPC — not the Tavernkeep, Traveling Merchant or Skeleton Merchant. You must not be standing in Corruption or Crimson, and another NPC must be nearby. The pylon offered matches your biome, not the seller’s.
TeleportingAt least two housed NPCs must be within a 169×124 tile rectangle around the pylon at both ends of the trip.
PlacementA pylon only works in its own biome.
One per typeYou can only place one pylon of each type in a world, Universal included.
Standing nearYou must be within about 60 tiles of a pylon to use the network at all.
MinimapThe network needs the minimap enabled to function.

When a teleport refuses, the game gives a status message that names the reason: a pylon that is too far away, one with too few villagers nearby, or one that is not in its correct biome. Reading that message is faster than guessing. Villager happiness itself is covered on the NPC happiness page.

Building a network

Two pylons anywhere in the world is enough to start teleporting, which makes the first pair the biggest quality-of-life jump in the game.

  1. Pick two high-value anchors — usually your base and whichever biome you visit most.
  2. Build a real village at each. Two housed NPCs, not two wandering ones. A valid house plus a resident is what satisfies the teleport rule.
  3. Buy the pylon standing in the right biome, so the correct type is offered.
  4. Test both directions. Both ends need their own two villagers; it is common to build one end properly and forget the other.
  5. Expand outward — Ocean, Underworld and Mushroom are the ones players typically add last, because the housing is awkward there.

Because the Aether pylon only needs Shimmer nearby rather than a specific biome, it is the easiest one to place inside a base once you have moved a Shimmer pool.

New in 1.4.5

The pylon system changed noticeably in 1.4.5, so older guides describe a stricter version of it.

  • Two new pylons: Underworld and Aether.
  • The minimum happiness requirement to buy a pylon was removed entirely. An NPC will sell you one regardless of how happy they are.
  • Pylons can now be used during events. The old restriction that disabled them during boss fights, invasions and Frost Moon or Pumpkin Moon is gone.
  • New map visualisation: opening the full map draws connections between all your pylons.
  • Clicking the map now prioritises pylons over the Wormhole Potion.
  • The “not enough NPCs nearby” message was clarified to say NPCs need to live near the pylon, not merely stand near it.
  • Later hotfixes: 1.4.5.3 stopped pylons attracting lightning, and 1.4.5.4 stopped the Tavernkeep selling them at all.
If a guide tells you to farm NPC happiness before buying a pylon, it predates 1.4.5. That requirement is gone. The two-housed-NPC requirement for teleporting is separate and still applies.
