Quick answer

ACE COMBAT ZERO: THE BELKAN WAR is a pre-order bonus rather than a separate product, and today it is launched from inside ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE. After reversing its position twice in two weeks, Bandai Namco Entertainment confirmed on October 13, 2026 that it will be made available as a standalone application on Steam, with final QA and compatibility testing under way. No release date has been given, and the change applies only to players who already obtained it as a pre-order bonus.

At a glance

ACE COMBAT ZERO: THE BELKAN WAR is the pre-order bonus title for ACE COMBAT 8, and it is not currently sold on its own. It is launched from inside ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE. That is the position today, and it is a position the publisher has changed its mind about twice in two weeks.

The current state of play: Bandai Namco Entertainment has confirmed that ACE COMBAT ZERO will be made available as a standalone application on Steam, and says final quality assurance and compatibility testing are under way. No release date has been given. The change applies only to players who already obtained the title as a pre-order bonus, and the publisher states that players who do not already own it will not be able to get it through this change.

What this title is, and how it is distributed right now

ACE COMBAT ZERO: THE BELKAN WAR is an earlier entry in the series offered as the pre-order incentive for ACE COMBAT 8 — third-party reporting carried in the game's own Steam news feed describes it as first released in 2006 on PlayStation 2. It is not a mode built for ACE COMBAT 8 and it is not a piece of the new campaign; it is a separate game, distributed as an extra.

Its distribution on PC has been the source of the dispute. Rather than appearing as its own Steam product, it runs through ACE COMBAT 8 — which means the current game has to be installed for it to be launched. The publisher's first statement on the subject opened by acknowledging that this had not been explained well in advance, and apologized for that.

What has been confirmed and what has not. Confirmed by the publisher: the title is a pre-order bonus, it currently runs through ACE COMBAT 8, and a standalone Steam application is being prepared for people who already hold the bonus. Not announced: when the standalone application arrives, how it will be delivered, and whether it will cost anything. This page does not guess at any of those.

The three publisher updates, in order

The publisher published three updates on this subject, and reading them as a sequence is the only way to see what actually changed. The first said a standalone release was not possible; the second said the company was exploring exactly that; the third confirmed it.

Publisher updates on the distribution of ACE COMBAT ZERO, in the order they were published
DateTitleWhat it said
October 1, 2026About ACE COMBAT ZERO: THE BELKAN WARThat it could not currently be released on Steam as a standalone application, giving licensing restrictions and platform-related considerations as the reason, and that the publisher had chosen to make it available through ACE COMBAT 8 instead. It apologized for not communicating the distribution method in advance and stated that any change could not be guaranteed.
October 2, 2026About ACE COMBAT ZERO: THE BELKAN WAR ②That following discussions with platform partners the publisher now expects "to move forward with evaluating a change in the distribution method", and that it was "exploring the possibility of making ACE COMBAT ZERO available as a standalone application on Steam" while reviewing implementation details and timing — including whether the approach could ultimately be realized.
October 13, 2026About ACE COMBAT ZERO: THE BELKAN WAR ③That "ACE COMBAT ZERO will be made available as a standalone application on Steam", with final quality assurance and compatibility testing under way.

Two sentences from the first update are worth keeping, because they show how open the question was at that point. The publisher wrote that "due to licensing restrictions and platform-related considerations, it cannot currently be released on Steam as a standalone application", and closed with "at this time, we cannot guarantee that any changes will be made". The second update then added its own qualifier — "including whether this approach can ultimately be realized". The third dropped the conditional entirely.

Who can get it, and who cannot

The October 13 update opens with the restriction, and it is the single most important sentence on this page:

  • The change is limited to existing holders. "This update applies only to players who obtained ACE COMBAT ZERO as a pre-order bonus."
  • It does not create a new route to the game. "Players who do not already own the pre-order bonus will not be able to newly obtain ACE COMBAT ZERO through this change."
  • The pre-order window has closed. The game released on October 2, 2026, so the bonus is no longer being attached to purchases. What the pre-order bonus contained is set out on the editions and prices page.
  • Both forms will exist side by side. "Once this update is implemented, players will be able to access both the existing version of ACE COMBAT ZERO played through ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE and the standalone application version of ACE COMBAT ZERO." The existing route is not being withdrawn.
If you did not pre-order, nothing changes for you. The publisher states this in plain terms rather than leaving it to inference: the standalone application is a convenience for existing holders, not a wider release. Anyone who wants to play ACE COMBAT ZERO without the pre-order bonus has no announced route to it on PC.

Saves between the two versions

Save data is expected to carry across, and the publisher's wording is deliberately provisional: "we expect save data to be shared between both versions through Steam Cloud functionality".

Two things follow that are worth separating. The mechanism named is Steam Cloud, which is a Steam feature rather than a Bandai Namco one, so the expectation depends on the standalone application being a normal Steam product with cloud saves enabled. And the wording is "we expect" rather than a statement of fact, at a point when the publisher also says compatibility testing is still running. Treat save continuity as planned rather than delivered until the application exists.

What is still not announced

  • The release schedule. The publisher writes that it will "provide further details regarding the release schedule and distribution method once our final verification process has been completed". No date is attached.
  • The distribution method. Whether the standalone application arrives as an automatic entitlement, a code, or something else is not stated.
  • Whether it will cost anything. No price is mentioned in any of the three updates, and there is no store listing to check.
  • Whether the restriction will ever lift. The publisher has been explicit that this change does not create a new acquisition route; it has said nothing about a future standalone release for everyone.
  • Anything about the content itself. None of the three updates discusses the game's content, its missions, or whether the PC release differs from what shipped originally.

Because ACE COMBAT ZERO is part of the pre-order bundle rather than an edition, the question of what a purchase gets you today belongs on the editions and prices page, and the question of which systems the game is on belongs on the platform availability page.

Sources and review scope

Checked on October 15, 2026. All three updates are quoted from the publisher's own announcements rather than summarised from coverage of them. The status is reported as it stands on the check date: the standalone application is confirmed in principle, not shipped. Where the publisher used conditional language — the expectation about Steam Cloud saves, the pending schedule — the conditionality is reproduced rather than smoothed away. No release date, price or delivery mechanism is stated anywhere on this page, because the publisher has not given one.

How this guide was checked

Checked on October 15, 2026 against the Steam store listing and the Steam Web API app-details endpoint for ACE COMBAT 8, the publisher's own Steam announcements, and the Steam achievements API. Requirement figures, the DRM notice and the difficulty descriptions are quoted from official sources rather than paraphrased. Where a detail comes from a third-party wiki or from a player post rather than from Bandai Namco Entertainment, it is labelled as exactly that. Anything the publisher has not stated is written as unconfirmed rather than guessed.

Not independently play-tested. This is not a claim that every platform or game version was tested. Source review: Oct 15, 2026.
