Scope: Official Pokédex classification and Pokémon creator interview

Quick answer

The Pokédex classifies Pikachu as the Mouse Pokémon, but original designer Atsuko Nishida said squirrels inspired the cheek-pouch idea and some of the early design. The two answers describe different things: the official in-world category and a real-world design influence.

Mouse or squirrel?

Both words appear in reliable explanations, but they answer different questions. The official Pokédex category is “Mouse Pokémon.” Original designer Atsuko Nishida separately explained that a squirrel inspired the cheek-storage concept during development.

How the design began

In Pokémon’s official creator profile, Nishida describes wanting the character to store electricity in its cheeks and drawing from squirrels’ food-filled cheeks. The same interview explains that Satoshi Tajiri later gave Pikachu its mouse setting. The finished character therefore has an official mouse classification while retaining a documented squirrel influence.

Where the name came from

The official interview connects “pika” with a flash or sparkle. Nishida chose “chu” for the sound and size of the name; she also notes that people associated it with a mouse squeak. This origin is more precise than treating the whole name as a direct translation of “electric mouse.”
