Octarina timed modes: confirmed achievement targets vs player claims

Separate Octarina’s two official challenge modes from community “speedrun mode” wording, and compare the confirmed Takoyaki target with unverified 45- and 81-second claims.

Quick answer

Octarina officially lists Checkpoint Race and The Floor is Lava as its two extra challenge modes. Steam confirms only one numerical achievement condition: Takoyaki says under 50 seconds. Roll Octopus Roll says only “Be the fastest!” The 45-second Takoyaki threshold and roughly 81-second Roll target come from players, and no official source checked here maps either achievement to a named mode.

Confirmed answer: the official mode names are Checkpoint Race and The Floor is Lava. Steam publishes “under 50 sec” for Takoyaki, but gives Roll Octopus Roll only the description “Be the fastest!” Neither public Steam page checked here states which named mode triggers which achievement. Treat 45 seconds and about 81 seconds as player reports, not official cutoffs.

The two official challenge modes

Official mode 01

Checkpoint Race

Navigate through the factory and reach checkpoints within a time limit. Steam explicitly describes checkpoints and a limited timeframe.

Official mode 02

The Floor is Lava

Follow a specific route without touching or falling into lava. Steam also tells players to try to be the fastest.

Published achievement link: none found

These descriptions come from the Steam product page. The store does not display a third menu mode formally named Speedrun Mode.

Confirmed achievement targets vs player claims

What each source actually establishes
AchievementSteam wordingPlayer timing claimSafe conclusion
Takoyaki“under 50 sec”A community guide warns that it may appear only below 45 seconds; a forum reply also cites 45 seconds.50 seconds is the only published official number. The stricter 45-second value is unverified.
Roll Octopus Roll“Be the fastest!”The same community guide suggests being around 81 seconds, credited to another player. No official numerical cutoff is public. About 81 seconds is a test target, not a guarantee.

Steam’s global achievement page also shows that both achievements have been unlocked by a small share of players, but completion percentages change over time and do not reveal the trigger. A successful unlock by itself does not prove whether the timer uses finish time, checkpoint splits, an internal leaderboard or another condition.

Confirmed

  • Two official challenge modes.
  • Takoyaki says under 50 seconds.
  • Roll Octopus Roll has no published number.

Player reported

  • Takoyaki may require under 45 seconds.
  • Roll may unlock around 81 seconds.
  • Players use “speedrun mode” informally.

Still unknown

  • Which named mode maps to each achievement.
  • Whether loading or resets count.
  • The precise Roll cutoff and timing endpoints.

What does “speedrun mode” mean here?

A 2021 Steam discussion asks whether Roll Octopus Roll requires the fastest time in “the speedrun mode.” That wording is a player’s question, not a label quoted from the game or store. The official store instead names Checkpoint Race, which is explicitly timed, and The Floor is Lava, which also invites a fast finish.

A separate Speedrun.com leaderboard has a community category called Story Mode. It documents external full-story runs; it is not evidence that the game menu contains a third official mode or that its leaderboard times unlock either Steam achievement.

How to record a reproducible timing test

There is not enough evidence for a guaranteed shortcut route, but a clean test can make a new result useful:

  1. Name the mode exactly as shown in the menu. Record Checkpoint Race or The Floor is Lava instead of writing only “speedrun.”
  2. Record the game build and a continuous run. Include the menu selection, start countdown, finish screen and achievement notification.
  3. Write down both visible and external times. If the game displays a result, preserve that number separately from a video timer.
  4. Note resets and contact rules. Record whether checkpoints were restarted, whether lava was touched and whether the run returned to the menu.
  5. Repeat once before calling it a threshold. One unlock proves that a time can work on that build; it does not identify the highest qualifying time.

For all 16 achievement names and the two unresolved hidden unlocks, use the Octarina achievement status guide. For ordinary story progression, use the story route guide; story speedruns are outside this page’s tested scope.

Sources and review scope

Reviewed October 21, 2026. Scope: public Steam PC information for app 1503280. No timed run was independently performed, the community guide currently carries a Steam removal/incompatibility warning, and no developer explanation linking the achievements to modes was found. Recheck after official achievement text, mode descriptions or a reproducible current-build test changes.

How this guide was checked

Steam names both modes and publishes only one numerical achievement target. Community timing claims are retained as reports and are not presented as guaranteed unlock conditions.
