Quick answer

FiveM is a free, custom multiplayer client created by Cfx.re that runs on top of a legitimate copy of Grand Theft Auto V. It is not GTA Online and not a stand-alone game: you connect to community-run roleplay and custom-game servers instead of Rockstar’s official services. Rockstar Games announced the acquisition of Cfx.re on August 11, 2023, so the team behind FiveM now operates under Rockstar. You must own GTA V on Steam, the Epic Games Store or the Rockstar Games Launcher to use it; pirated copies are not supported.

Evidence key: Official means Cfx.re / FiveM documentation, the Rockstar Games Newswire or SteamDB; community means player reports. Every source below was reviewed October 20, 2026.

The one-line definition

Official: FiveM is a free, custom multiplayer client for Grand Theft Auto V. It does not replace GTA V — it loads on top of a copy you already own and connects you to community-run servers (roleplay, racing, deathmatch and custom game modes) rather than Rockstar’s official GTA Online. Think of it as a separate way to play your existing GTA V, not a competing game. FiveM official documentation · Checked October 20, 2026.

Free, and who makes it

Official: FiveM is free to download and play. It is developed by Cfx.re, the same team behind RedM (the equivalent client for Red Dead Redemption 2). Cfx.re describes FiveM as a “customization and roleplay platform” built around the GTA V engine. You do not pay Cfx.re to use the client itself. Cfx.re documentation · Checked October 20, 2026.

The client is free, but individual community servers may sell extras, passes or whitelist spots under their own rules. That is server-side commerce, not a FiveM license fee.

The simplest distinction: GTA Online is Rockstar’s service; FiveM is the community platform that uses your GTA V files to run third-party servers. Progress, friends and purchases do not carry over between the two. Official FiveM overview · Checked October 20, 2026.

Do you need to own GTA V?

Official: yes. Cfx.re’s documentation states FiveM “requires a fully updated installation of GTAV” and “does not condone pirated software.” You must own GTA V on one of these stores: Steam, the Epic Games Store, or the Rockstar Games Launcher (and on console, the matching platform store). FiveM reads the game files from that legitimate installation; it is not a stand-alone download that bundles the game. Official “Where to buy GTAV” · Checked October 20, 2026.

A pirated or borrowed copy will not work and is explicitly outside Cfx.re’s supported use. FiveM also requires Windows 8.1, 10 or 11 with the latest updates — see the install guide for the full requirements.

The Rockstar connection

Official: on August 11, 2023, Rockstar Games announced it had acquired Cfx.re. The Newswire states: “Cfx.re — the team behind the popular FiveM and RedM projects for the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption game series — are now officially a part of Rockstar Games.” FiveM therefore continues as a Cfx.re project operating under Rockstar, not as an unsanctioned mod. Rockstar Games Newswire, August 11, 2023 · Checked October 20, 2026.

This acquisition is why FiveM’s Steam presence uses app 2676230, a free application on Steam rather than a paid game. SteamDB lists it as a free app with a large concurrent player base (tens of thousands online at review time). SteamDB app 2676230 · Checked October 20, 2026.

FiveM and RedM

Official: RedM is the sibling client from the same Cfx.re team, built for Red Dead Redemption 2 instead of GTA V. If you see guides or servers mention RedM, they refer to the RDR2 platform — a separate product with its own requirements and servers, not covered in this FiveM section. A future RedM section may follow. Cfx.re documentation · Checked October 20, 2026.

Safety and the rules boundary

FiveM includes anti-cheat and server-side enforcement. Cfx.re’s own rules prohibit cheats, leaks and token abuse on its platform. This guide section does not provide or link to cheat tools, leaked game files or account-token finders; doing so breaks both Cfx.re’s terms and this site’s sourcing policy. If a server kicks or bans you, that decision is made by the server owner, and FiveM does not intervene in individual server bans. Cfx.re documentation · Checked October 20, 2026.

Treat any third-party “FiveM hack,” “free GTA V through FiveM” or “token generator” claim as a violation of the platform’s rules and a likely security risk. None of those are documented or endorsed by Cfx.re.
