Lara Croft timeline explained: Classic, Legend and Survivor eras
Understand the three major Lara Croft continuities without combining conflicting origins and family histories.
Scope: Classic, Legend and Survivor game continuities
Quick answer
Lara Croft does not have one uninterrupted biography across every game. The Classic era begins with the 1996 game, the Legend era rewrites her family history, and the Survivor era begins again with Tomb Raider (2013). Use each era as its own continuity unless an official source explicitly connects a newer work.

Classic timeline
The Classic era begins with Core Design’s Tomb Raider (1996) and runs through The Angel of Darkness (2003). This Lara is already an established, independent adventurer. Contemporary manuals and supporting material give her an aristocratic upbringing and a Himalayan plane-crash experience, but those details were rewritten by later reboots.
The I–III and IV–VI Remastered collections preserve these six main adventures in two current bundles. They update presentation and access; they do not make the Classic biography identical to the later versions.
Legend timeline
Tomb Raider: Legend introduced a new family history involving Lara’s mother Amelia and father Richard. Anniversary retells the original Scion expedition inside this continuity, and Underworld follows plot threads from both games. That makes the useful story order Anniversary → Legend → Underworld even though Legend was released first.
Survivor timeline
Tomb Raider (2013) starts another origin. Lara is a young archaeologist on the Endurance expedition to Yamatai; Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider continue that version’s development. The official Netflix animation is positioned after the Survivor trilogy.
Current official material presents a more unified visual identity for future games, but that does not retroactively make every contradictory birth year or family event true in one timeline. For a number such as age or height, see the version-aware profile.
