The Last of Us game vs HBO show: major story and world differences
Compare the game and television adaptation without mixing their timelines, infection rules or characters.
Applies to: Part I and HBO seasons 1–2 · major spoilers labeled
Quick answer
The HBO series follows the games’ central Joel-and-Ellie relationship but changes its outbreak year, infection transmission, locations and several character stories. Treat the two versions as related continuities: a detail confirmed in the show is not automatically a game fact.

Timeline and outbreak
The game’s outbreak begins in 2013 and its main journey occurs twenty years later. The show moves the outbreak to 2003 and the main journey to 2023. The show also emphasizes contaminated food and tendrils, while gameplay uses spores in enclosed areas and masks.
Character and location changes
The series expands Sarah’s final day, rewrites Bill and Frank’s shared history, moves the Pittsburgh section to Kansas City and gives several supporting characters more independent screen time. These are adaptation choices, not corrections to game canon.
Games are not episode transcripts
Season 1 broadly adapts Part I and Left Behind; later television material draws on Part II but rearranges perspective and timing. Use game guides for puzzles and collectibles because those sequences may not exist on television.
