Quick answer
Bandai Namco Entertainment announced on October 9, 2026 that the game is a million seller, calling it the fastest-selling title in the 30-year franchise and ranking it second in the series on aggregate critic scores behind ACE COMBAT 4: Shattered Skies (2001); no per-platform sales, revenue or updated total has been published since. On October 15, 2026 Metacritic listed 87 for PlayStation 5, 87 for PC and 88 for Xbox Series X — three separate platform scores on different sample sizes, with the Xbox score resting on eight critic reviews, and all of them move as further reviews are added, so no single score is given here. Steam's all-languages review summary was Very Positive across 20,267 reviews on the same date, a figure that also changes.

At a glance
The publisher's own announcement of October 9, 2026 says ACE COMBAT 8 "soars to million seller faster than any other title in the 30-year franchise". That is the only sales figure the publisher has given, and it is a milestone rather than a count: no per-platform split, no revenue figure and no updated total has been published since.
Critic scores are a different kind of number, and they are not one number. On October 15, 2026, Metacritic listed 87 for PlayStation 5, 87 for PC and 88 for Xbox Series X. Those are separate platform scores on separate sample sizes, they move as reviews are added, and this page does not merge them. The publisher also claims a series ranking from aggregate scores without naming the aggregate sites, which is recorded below as a publisher statement rather than as a checked figure.
What the publisher has said
The milestone announcement is short and worth quoting directly:
Two further sentences in the same announcement carry claims that are the publisher's, not this page's. The first places the game "ranking second based on critics' scores listed by game review aggregate sites". The second names the game it ranks behind: ACE COMBAT 4: Shattered Skies, released in 2001. The announcement does not name the aggregate sites it means, and no aggregate is quoted by the publisher, so the ranking cannot be reproduced from a published source here.
The publisher's own website carries the same milestone with an explicit figure and retains the October 9, 2026 date: ACE COMBAT 8 "has reached 1 million units worldwide at the fastest pace in the franchise". That remains the most specific official sales statement available.
Review scores by platform
Metacritic publishes a separate Metascore for each platform, and the three do not agree. The figures below are what each platform's own card showed on October 15, 2026.
| Platform | Metascore | Critic reviews counted |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | 87 | 72 |
| PC | 87 | 40 |
| Xbox Series X | 88 | 8 |
Three things about that table matter more than the numbers. The PC and PlayStation 5 scores are identical at 87, so a single-score summary would be accurate today by coincidence rather than by design. The Xbox score rests on eight critic reviews, a sample small enough that one outlet changing its verdict moves it. And the game's own Metacritic page displays a headline of 87 labelled "Generally Favorable" against a count of 70 critic reviews, alongside a PlayStation 5 breakdown of 67 positive, 3 mixed and no negative reviews. The headline count and the per-platform counts do not match exactly, which is why both are given here rather than collapsed.
Metacritic also carries a user score, which is written by players rather than critics: 8.8 out of 10 from 169 user ratings on October 15, 2026, also labelled "Generally Favorable". It is a much smaller sample than the critic totals and measures a different population. It is recorded here as a separate figure, not as a second opinion on the critic score.
What the reviews say, in their own words
Two of the scored reviews are quoted below, each attributed to its outlet with the date and the score Metacritic lists for it. These are third-party publications; neither quote is a publisher statement.
- MonsterVine, 100, September 25, 2026 — "If you enjoy exploring an action game in a massive 3D space, love jets and airplanes, or are already a fan of the franchise, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is a masterclass in its category."
- Noisy Pixel, 95, September 25, 2026 — the review credits the game with "exceptionally responsive controls with stunning audiovisual presentation and a substantial 30-mission campaign", and adds a criticism in the same review: "Upgrades can feel unnecessary on standard difficulty."
The sample is not divided by the numbers: PlayStation 5 carries 67 positive reviews, three mixed and none negative in Metacritic's breakdown for that platform, and the reviews at the top of its score-sorted list sit in the nineties and above. The reservation quoted from Noisy Pixel is worth keeping in view because it is one of the few criticisms raised in a high-scoring review, and it concerns the upgrade system rather than the campaign itself.
Steam player reviews
Steam's review summary is the largest single body of player reaction, and its label is straightforward.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Overall rating | Very Positive |
| Total reviews | 20,267 |
| Positive | 16,877, or about 83% |
| Negative | 3,390 |
These are all-languages figures pulled from Steam's public review endpoint. Steam also shows a separate figure for reviews written in English only; because that is a narrower population, this page quotes the all-languages rating and does not present an English-only number as equivalent. The store page's own review total and the endpoint's total are different figures, so the count above should be read as the review endpoint's all-languages total on the date given rather than as the exact number displayed on the store page.
Concurrent players
Player counts are a separate question from sales, and the two sources here are not equal in status.
- Peak, third-party: SteamDB reports that the game "peaked at 52,694 concurrent players on 3 October 2026 a day after release". SteamDB is an independent tracker, and the publisher has published no peak figure. Treat 52,694 as a third-party measurement.
- Current, official API: Steam's own player-count endpoint returned 8,898 players in game when checked on October 15, 2026. This is a single moment, not a trend, and it will read differently at any other time.
The gap between the two is the normal shape of a launch: a steep peak, then a much smaller steady population. Neither figure is a sales number, and neither can be converted into one.
What is not known
- Sales by platform. The publisher has never published a split. A million-seller milestone is a worldwide total across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and nothing official breaks it down.
- Revenue or profit. No figure of any kind has been published, so no margin can be calculated from the sales milestone.
- Final review scores. Every score on this page is a moving number. The Xbox sample in particular is small, and the Metacritic headline count and the per-platform counts do not agree.
- The aggregate sites behind the publisher's ranking claim. The announcement says the game ranks second in the franchise on critics' scores listed by aggregate sites without naming them, so the claim is recorded as a publisher statement rather than reproduced as a verified ranking.
Whether the game is worth buying at its current price is a separate question from its scores, and the version-by-version differences are covered on the price and editions page. Launch timing and platform availability are on the release status page.
Sources and review scope
- Bandai Namco Entertainment — "ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE soars to million seller", October 9, 2026 — source of the publisher's sales milestone, the franchise-speed claim, the ranking claim and the reference to ACE COMBAT 4: Shattered Skies (2001). Quoted directly.
- Bandai Namco Entertainment — official ACE COMBAT 8 game page — source of the publisher's own news headline stating that the game "has reached 1 million units worldwide at the fastest pace in the franchise", dated October 9, 2026.
- Metacritic — ACE COMBAT 8: Wings of Theve — third-party aggregator, source of the three platform Metascores, the critic review counts, the headline score and review breakdown, and the user score. All figures are the October 15, 2026 snapshot and change over time.
- Metacritic — ACE COMBAT 8 critic reviews — source of the MonsterVine and Noisy Pixel quotes, each with its outlet, date and score as listed by Metacritic. Both are third-party publications and neither is a publisher statement.
- Steam review API — ACE COMBAT 8 — source of the all-languages review total, the positive and negative counts and the overall rating, checked October 15, 2026.
- Steam store API — ACE COMBAT 8 app details — used to confirm that the store listing presents a single overall review rating for the game.
- Steam Web API — current player count — source of the 8,898 figure, a single moment captured on October 15, 2026.
- Steam news feed for ACE COMBAT 8 — the announcement channel through which the third-party SteamDB notice reporting a peak of 52,694 concurrent players on October 3, 2026 was published. It is a third-party tracker, not a publisher source, and is labelled as such above.
The sales figure, the franchise-speed claim and the ranking claim are quoted from the publisher's own announcement and are dated in the body. Every review score, review count, user score and player count is a dated snapshot and is not presented as a fixed value. Platform scores are kept separate and are not averaged or merged; where Metacritic's own headline count and its per-platform counts differ, both are given rather than resolved. The two quoted reviews are attributed by outlet, date and score. No score is assigned by this page, no sales number is estimated from any other figure, and the peak concurrent figure is labelled third-party because the publisher has not published one. Reviewed October 15, 2026.
Checked on October 15, 2026 against the Steam store listing and the Steam Web API app-details endpoint for ACE COMBAT 8, the publisher's own Steam announcements, and the Steam achievements API. Requirement figures, the DRM notice and the difficulty descriptions are quoted from official sources rather than paraphrased. Where a detail comes from a third-party wiki or from a player post rather than from Bandai Namco Entertainment, it is labelled as exactly that. Anything the publisher has not stated is written as unconfirmed rather than guessed.
