Enshrouded Dedicated Server Setup: Install, Configure, and Connect
Set up the official Windows dedicated server, configure slots and user groups, open the correct port, verify startup, and protect the world save.
Applies to: Official Enshrouded Dedicated Server tool on Windows · Enshrouded 1.0
Quick answer
On a Windows host, install “Enshrouded Dedicated Server” from Steam Library > Tools, browse its installed files, and run Enshrouded Dedicated Server.exe directly once. Stop it, edit the generated enshrouded_server.json, then allow the chosen IPv4 query port through the host firewall and router. Start the executable again and wait for the HostOnline message before joining through the in-game dedicated-server browser. Back up the savegame folder before updates or configuration changes.

Before you install
| Check | Current official guidance | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Host operating system | Windows only; Linux support is described as planned | The official executable and steps in this guide are for Windows. |
| Free storage | 30 GB recommended; server files are listed at about 13 GB uncompressed | Leaves room for updates, logs, and saves. |
| Memory | About 4.4 GB at idle, up to 100 MB per player, and no more than about 6 GB total | Do not give a 16-slot server to a memory-starved host. |
| Network | IPv4; default query port 15637 plus Steam’s required ports | The port must reach the host through both firewall and router. |
| Players | slotCount accepts 1–16 | Lower the limit when CPU or memory is the bottleneck. |
Install the tool and start it once
- In Steam Library, enable the Tools filter.
- Install Enshrouded Dedicated Server. Owning Enshrouded on Steam unlocks the tool.
- Right-click the tool, open Properties → Installed Files → Browse.
- Run
Enshrouded Dedicated Server.exefrom that folder. Keen recommends running the executable rather than Steam’s Launch button. - Wait for the first initialization, then stop the server cleanly. The first run creates
enshrouded_server.json.
Configure the server
Open enshrouded_server.json in a text editor while the server is stopped. Keep valid JSON: properties need commas, text values need double quotes, and booleans do not.

}| Setting | Safe starting choice | Change it when… |
|---|---|---|
name | A recognizable, non-offensive server name | Your group needs to find it in the browser. |
ip | 0.0.0.0 | Only when your internal network design requires a specific bind address. |
queryPort | 15637 | The port conflicts with another service or multiple servers share one public IP. |
slotCount | Your actual group size, from 1 to 16 | You have measured spare host capacity for more players. |
gameSettingsPreset | Default | Your group agrees on Relaxed, Hard, Survival, or documented Custom settings. |
Use current user groups for passwords and permissions
Older examples put one password at the top of the configuration. Keen’s current roles guide says that line is no longer the way to set up dedicated-server passwords. Use userGroups so different passwords can grant different permissions.
- Admin: use a unique password; grant kick/ban and full building permissions only to trusted operators.
- Friend: allow normal play and base interaction without moderation powers.
- Guest: restrict inventory or building access if strangers may join.
Never publish real passwords in a screenshot, support post, or shared config. If an old configuration still contains the legacy password, read Keen’s migration behavior before removing it, then replace it with explicit groups.
Open the network path
- Keep the default
queryPortat15637unless you have a reason to change it. - Allow the server executable and the selected query port through Windows Firewall for the network profile the host actually uses.
- If friends connect over the internet, forward the same external port to the host computer’s fixed internal IPv4 address.
- Review Valve’s current required Steam ports as Keen directs; do not assume the query port is the only Steam networking requirement.
- If the host is behind carrier-grade NAT or another upstream router, ordinary forwarding may not create a reachable public route. Ask the ISP for a public IPv4 option or use a compatible hosted server.
Start, verify, and connect
- Start
Enshrouded Dedicated Server.exeand leave its console running. - Wait for a log line containing
HostOnlineand the transition toHost_Online. Do not troubleshoot discovery while startup is still in progress. - In Enshrouded, choose Join and enable the filter that shows dedicated servers. Search for the configured name.
- If it does not appear, Steam’s View → Game Servers interface can favorite a server by IP, as described in Keen’s FAQ.
- Test once from another internet connection. A same-network test does not prove that router forwarding works.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Check in order |
|---|---|
| Server never reaches online state | Read the newest file in ./logs; validate the JSON; confirm the server and game builds match; temporarily restore a freshly generated config. |
| Works on LAN, not over the internet | Check Windows Firewall, router forwarding, the host’s internal IPv4 address, double NAT, and carrier-grade NAT. |
| Server is online but missing in the browser | Enable the dedicated-server filter, search the exact name, then try Steam’s Game Servers favorite-by-IP route. |
| Players can join but cannot build or use containers | Confirm which user-group password they entered and inspect that group’s current permissions. |
| Performance falls as the group grows | Lower slotCount, watch CPU and memory, and compare usage with Keen’s approximate 4.4–6 GB figures. |
Back up and update safely
Stop the server before copying files. Back up ./savegame and the configuration to a dated folder outside the server installation directory. Keen says the server stores world progression while character progression stays on each client, and world saves are generated about every five minutes. A server backup therefore does not replace each player’s client-side protection.
Before a major update, make a fresh backup, update the Steam tool, read current patch notes, and compare newly documented settings with your config. If the format changes, preserve the backup and let the executable generate a fresh file before transferring only settings that are still documented.
This self-host method is not a PS5 setup
The official installation article describes a Windows executable, while the PlayStation version is a separate multiplayer pool and cross-platform play is not available at launch. Do not assume that a Steam-hosted dedicated server will appear for PS5 players. PS5 groups should use hosting options explicitly documented for the PlayStation version.
