Quick answer
Wallpaper Engine for Windows is paid once through Steam, with no subscription stated by the official site. Wallpapers on the Steam Workshop and the Android companion app are free. Steam prices vary by store region, so check the live listing for your account before buying.
What costs money?
The Windows desktop app is sold on Steam as a one-time purchase. The official site says there is no subscription. The exact amount shown depends on the Steam store region attached to your account, so use the live Steam listing to check the price before buying.
What is free?
- Steam Workshop wallpapers: the official site says wallpapers are free. Subscribing to a wallpaper through Steam Workshop does not add a wallpaper charge.
- Android companion app: the official site describes the Android app as free.
The free wallpapers do not make the Windows desktop app free. They are separate parts of the product.
Is the Android app the full desktop version?
No. It is a companion app for transferring a wallpaper collection wirelessly from a Windows computer to an Android phone or tablet. The Android app cannot access Steam Workshop directly. It requires Android 10 or later; lock-screen live wallpaper support depends on the device.
See the official Android page and the official pairing instructions for supported devices and transfer steps.
How do I check the price in my region?
- Open the official Steam product page while signed in to the Steam account you plan to use.
- Check the price displayed for that account’s store region.
- Review the current listing before checkout; prices and currency displays can change.
This guide does not quote a fixed USD price because the Steam listing is region-dependent. It also does not recommend unofficial “free download” sites.
