Valor Mortis Reviews and Ratings: What the Scores Say
Valor Mortis review scores from Metacritic, OpenCritic and Steam, with the named outlets behind them — and why one number cannot summarise them.
Applies to: Review scores and the Steam review summary for Valor Mortis, checked on October 14, 2026
Quick answer
Valor Mortis sits at 77 on Metacritic for PC across 44 critic reviews, and 83 for PS5; there were no Xbox Series reviews at the time of this check. OpenCritic records 84% of critics recommending it. On Steam the game has 323 reviews with 274 positive, which Steam labels Very Positive. Critic scores diverge sharply — from 9 out of 10 at TheGamer, Destructoid and GamingTrend down to 5 at Gamekult — so the average is hiding genuine disagreement rather than settling it. This page does not add a score of its own and does not rank the game against anything.

Aggregate scores
Valor Mortis opened to a mixed-but-positive critical reception that the aggregate numbers smooth over. Read on their own they look unremarkable; read against the spread of individual scores underneath them, they describe a game critics agreed to disagree about.
| Source | Value | Base |
|---|---|---|
| Metacritic (PC) | 77 | 44 scored critic reviews |
| Metacritic (PlayStation 5) | 79 | 14 critic reviews |
| Metacritic (Xbox Series X) | No score yet | Reviews not yet scored at this check |
| OpenCritic | 80 Top Critic Average | 76% of critics recommend |
The PC and PS5 figures coming from the same game, a day after launch, are a useful reminder to check which platform an aggregate is quoting before repeating it. A single "Valor Mortis score" does not exist — the number depends on which platform's reviewer pool you are reading.
The Steam summary
On Steam the game carried 337 reviews, 286 positive and 51 negative, which Steam labels Very Positive. The English-language subset was 196 reviews, 163 positive and 33 negative, also Very Positive.
Steam's label and a critic aggregate are not comparable quantities and are usually placed side by side as if they were. One is a large, self-selected group of people who bought the game; the other is a small group of professional reviewers. A gap between them is normal and is not evidence that either is wrong.
Where critics disagree
This is the part an average hides. Across the 44 scored PC reviews Metacritic had collected at this check, scores ran from 90 down to 50 — a wider band than most aggregated games produce — and the two largest groups sit at opposite ends of the middle.
| Score | Reviews | Outlets |
|---|---|---|
| 90 | 5 | Gamer Social Club · Destructoid · The Wand Report · TheGamer · GamingBolt |
| 88 | 1 | PlayUA |
| 85 | 7 | Gamers Heroes · CGMagazine · DualShockers · GRYOnline.pl · Combo Infinito · CD-Action · SECTOR.sk |
| 83 | 1 | Everyeye.it |
| 80 | 14 | Loot Level Chill · GAMINGbible · Gfinity · Eurogamer · Checkpoint Gaming · Multiplayer.it · Shacknews · Areajugones · GameStar · Region Free · SteamDeckHQ · Game Rant · Console Creatures · Noisy Pixel |
| 78 | 3 | COGconnected · Hobby Consolas · Uagna.it |
| 77 | 1 | Vandal |
| 75 | 2 | Wccftech · GameOver.gr |
| 70 | 5 | Gameliner · IGN · Game Informer · Gamesurf · TechRadar Gaming |
| 65 | 1 | DayOne |
| 60 | 3 | GamesRadar+ · GameSpot · Eurogamer Germany |
| 50 | 1 | Gamekult |
| Unscored | 1 | Rock, Paper, Shotgun |
The 80 group is the largest single band in the list, and the 70s include the highest-profile outlets in it — IGN and Game Informer both sit there. The top and the bottom are both minorities — but they are large enough minorities that a reader given only "77" would not know they existed.
Why there is no score here
This page does not award Valor Mortis a rating of its own, and the reason is not modesty. A score implies a comparison against a baseline, and the only baseline this site has is the published material it cites — the store description, the developer's own statements and the press. We have not played the game. A number derived from reading about it would be a synthesis of other people's opinions dressed up as an independent verdict.
What can be done honestly is to report what each source said, attribute it, and let the disagreement stand where it exists. That is what the table above is for.
What a score cannot tell you
- Whether the problems are fixed. A review written in the first days describes the build of that moment. With no patch shipped as of October 14, 2026, the reviewed build is still the current one — but that will change, and when it does, older scores describe a version that no longer exists.
- Whether it suits you. The spread from 5 to 9 is mostly a spread of taste, not of quality. Two reviewers looking at the same combat system reached opposite conclusions about it.
- What the game is. A score cannot convey that this is a first-person soulslike — a combination few games attempt. The what kind of game page covers that in the developer's own words, which is more useful than any number for deciding whether it is for you.
If you want the platform and price context behind these scores, the release date page and the price page cover them without repeating any of the above.
Sources and review scope
- Metacritic — Valor Mortis — used for the PC and PS5 aggregate scores, the count of scored reviews on each platform, and the absence of an Xbox Series score at this check.
- Metacritic — PC critic reviews — the source of every individual score and outlet name in the distribution table, read on October 14, 2026.
- OpenCritic — Valor Mortis — used for the Top Critic Average and the share of critics recommending the game.
- Steam — review query summary — used for the Steam review totals and the Very Positive label.
Every individual score in the distribution table is attributed to the named outlet and was read from Metacritic's own critic-review listing rather than from each outlet's page; where a review was published on a /5 or /20 scale, the normalised 100-point value Metacritic displays is the one shown. This site did not play the game, awards no score, and makes no recommendation. Aggregate figures move as late reviews are added, so any number here may already be different.
Checked on October 14, 2026 against the Steam store listing for Valor Mortis, the developer's own Steam announcements and Steam Discussions posts, the official Valor Mortis site, and the Steam Web API. Live details such as player counts, review totals and patch state change quickly and should be rechecked before you rely on them. Anything the developer has not confirmed is written as unconfirmed rather than guessed.
Not independently play-tested. This is not a claim that every platform or game version was tested. Source review: Oct 14, 2026.
