Quick answer

For a first story playthrough, play The Last of Us Part I, then its included Left Behind chapter, then The Last of Us Part II Remastered. The 2013 PS3 game, 2014 PS4 Remastered and 2022 Part I tell the same first main story in different releases; you do not need to play all three.

Recommended story order

  1. The Last of Us Part I — the modern remake of the first main story.
  2. Left Behind — play after Part I on a first run.
  3. The Last of Us Part II Remastered — the sequel and current PS5/PC edition.

What the names mean

The Last of Us (2013) is the PS3 original. Remastered (2014) updates that game for PS4 and includes Left Behind. Part I (2022) rebuilds the same first story for PS5 and later PC; PlayStation explicitly describes it as a ground-up remake, not an upgrade path from the older editions. Part II is the 2020 PS4 sequel, while Part II Remastered is its enhanced PS5 and PC release.

Where Left Behind fits

Its story spans events before Part I and a gap inside the main campaign. Playing it after the main story avoids revealing information in the order the original release intended.
