Why aquarium counts differ

The launch Zoopedia-derived data marks 37 species as aquarium-capable. Older previews and lists can show smaller totals because the launch roster changed, while some lists count only aquarium-exclusive animals. Our figure includes dual-home species such as brown trout, which can use an aquarium or an exhibit.

Animal groups

The aquarium roster spans sharks, rays, marine mammals, turtles and smaller fish. Each species has its own freshwater or saltwater status, minimum deep-water area, temperature and group size. A visually similar tank is not proof that two species share requirements; start from each Zoopedia entry.

The 37 aquarium-capable entries are listed below. Species that also support an exhibit still appear here because Aquarium is one of their valid categories.

Deluxe species

Several of the six Deluxe animals are aquatic, including the great hammerhead, blue and gold fusilier and longfin batfish. Filter by edition before designing a collection so a Deluxe-only species is not mistaken for a base-game unlock.

Choose an aquatic species by its real constraint

QuestionWhy it changes the build
Freshwater or saltwater?Determines the water environment
Minimum deep water?Sets the usable tank footprint
Group minimum?A single animal may not satisfy welfare
Aquarium or exhibit? Some fish allow both presentations
Base or Deluxe?Controls whether it can be acquired

Why an aquatic animal can still fail

  • The decorative footprint looks large, but the game calculates less usable deep water.
  • The temperature matches while salinity or group size does not.
  • Rockwork or viewing structures reduce traversable volume.
  • A guide uses preview-era totals or original-game mod information.

Use the live animal welfare panel to identify the failing requirement instead of rebuilding the entire aquarium at once.
