Quick answer

Planet Zoo 2 adds fully aquatic species, fully flying birds, Wildlife Reserves, new terrain and foliage brushes, revised pathing and a cross-platform Frontier Workshop. It is a standalone sequel, so playing the original first is optional.

Major additions

Planet Zoo 2 adds fully aquatic animals and custom freshwater or saltwater aquariums, flying birds and dynamic aviaries, and Wildlife Reserves built around conservation projects and ecosystem roles. Frontier also highlights revised pathing, terrain and foliage brushes, first-person exploration and the Frontier Workshop.

What returns

The sequel remains a zoo construction and management game with animal welfare, staff, guests, breeding, conservation and Franchise trading. Similar names do not make original-game instructions interchangeable: menus, roster, economy and building tools can differ.

Which should you choose?

Choose the sequel for its aquarium, aviary and reserve systems or its launch roster. Choose the original only after comparing its current packs and established workshop library with the features you actually want. Planet Zoo 2 is standalone, so the story does not require playing the first game.

Content ownership does not transfer automatically

The sequel is a separate product. Do not assume original-game DLC, workshop items, saves or animal packs become Planet Zoo 2 content unless Frontier explicitly supplies a transfer path.

Spot an original-game search result

Check the page title, publication date, UI screenshots and named DLC. If a guide never says Planet Zoo 2, its controls, habitat values and pack requirements should be treated as original-game information.
