How to turn off HDR in Dragon's Dogma 2
Disable the active HDR layer in the game, Windows 11 or the display and correct washed-out, dark or overexposed output.
Applies to: Windows PC display pipeline · monitor and driver menus vary
Quick answer
Close Dragon’s Dogma 2. In Windows 11, open Settings → System → Display, select the screen running the game, open HDR and turn Use HDR off. If you want Windows HDR for other content, leave it on and disable Auto HDR for this game through Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Dragon’s Dogma 2 → Options → Don’t use Auto HDR. Restart the game. If the picture remains wrong, disable the display’s own HDR tone-mapping mode or reset its picture preset.

Start with the signal source: Steam lists native HDR support, PCGamingWiki reports that it requires HDR enabled in Windows, and Windows can also apply Auto HDR. Monitor/TV processing adds a third layer. Turning off only one layer may leave the others active.
Quick off sequence
- Close Dragon’s Dogma 2.
- Open Windows 11 Settings → System → Display.
- Select the display used for the game, open HDR and turn Use HDR off.
- Restart the game so the display mode and swap chain are recreated.
- If the picture remains overprocessed, open the monitor/TV menu and disable its HDR or dynamic tone-mapping picture mode.

Identify which HDR layer is active
Game
A current graphics/display menu may expose HDR controls only when Windows reports an HDR-capable active display. Menu wording can change by build.
Windows
Use HDR changes the desktop/display pipeline. Auto HDR can enhance games separately.
Display
A monitor or TV can switch picture preset, tone mapping, black level or color range after receiving an HDR signal.
Symptom guide
| Symptom | Check first |
|---|---|
| Entire desktop and game look washed out | Windows Use HDR and the SDR/HDR brightness balance. |
| Only the game changes color | Game HDR option, per-app Auto HDR and overlays. |
| Blacks are grey or crushed | TV/monitor black level, RGB range and dynamic tone mapping. |
| Image becomes dark after unplugging a laptop | Windows battery HDR behavior; Microsoft notes HDR may switch with power state. |
| Wrong monitor receives HDR | Select the actual game display at the top of Windows Display settings. |
Keep HDR globally but disable Auto HDR for this game
- Leave Use HDR on.
- Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Select or add Dragon’s Dogma 2, then choose Options.
- Enable Don’t use Auto HDR, save and restart the game.
Microsoft documents this per-app control under Windows 11 windowed-game optimizations. Official instructions · Checked October 15, 2026.
Monitor and TV checks
- Reset the active HDR picture preset before tuning individual sliders.
- Disable dynamic contrast or dynamic tone mapping temporarily to isolate double processing.
- Match full/limited RGB range between GPU output and display input.
- On multiple displays, test the game on one selected screen rather than duplicated output.
Names vary by manufacturer, so this page does not invent a universal menu path.
Restore HDR safely
Re-enable one layer at a time: Windows Use HDR, then the game’s current HDR control if exposed, then display processing. Microsoft recommends adjusting SDR content brightness when SDR apps look too bright or dark on an HDR desktop. Stop when the wrong appearance returns; that isolates the responsible layer.
