FiveM Enhanced vs Legacy: Which GTA V Version Should You Use?

Compare FiveM on GTA V Enhanced (Gen9) and Legacy (Gen8): sync model, Pure mode, graphic mod support, gamebuild and how to choose the right version.

Quick answer

FiveM runs on two GTA V builds: Legacy (Gen8, the original 2013/2014 game) and Enhanced (Gen9, the 2025 Expanded & Enhanced edition). The practical split is Pure mode: on Enhanced, FiveM forces Pure mode and — while FiveM for GTAV Enhanced is in early access — graphic mods such as Reshade or NVE cannot be used. Legacy keeps graphic mod support. Enhanced requires the Rockstar Games Launcher and only supports the latest gamebuild (The Kortz Center Heist); Legacy can run older builds. Choose Enhanced if you own that edition and do not need graphic mods, or Legacy for older hardware and visual mods.

What Legacy and Enhanced mean

Official: FiveM runs on two GTA V builds. Legacy is the Gen8 version — the original 2013/2014 game on PC, last-gen consoles and their backward-compatible editions. Enhanced (sometimes called GTAV Enhanced or E&E) is the Gen9 version released as Expanded & Enhanced in 2025. Your choice depends on which GTA V edition you own and whether you want graphic mods. Cfx.re Legacy vs Enhanced · Checked October 20, 2026.

If you only own the original GTA V, you are on Legacy. If you claimed or bought the 2025 Enhanced edition, you can run FiveM in Enhanced mode. Official build documentation · Checked October 20, 2026.

Cfx.re’s documentation is explicit that on Enhanced, “Pure mode is now always enabled and can no longer be turned off.” Pure mode restricts which files can be modified, which is the root of the graphic-mod limit below. Official Legacy vs Enhanced · Checked October 20, 2026.

Graphic mods: the early-access limit

Official: the same documentation states: “While FiveM for GTAV Enhanced is in early access, graphic mods cannot be used.” This means tools such as Reshade, NVE (NaturalVision Evolved), QuantV or VisualV do not work on Enhanced while it is in early access, because Pure mode forces the client to use unmodified game files. Cfx.re Legacy vs Enhanced · Checked October 20, 2026.

Legacy keeps graphic mod support. If your goal is a heavily modded visual setup, Legacy is the build that allows it today. The early-access window is time-limited, but Cfx.re has not published an end date, so this page does not promise when Enhanced will lift the restriction. See the dedicated graphics-mods guide (added in the batch stage) for tool-by-tool detail.

“Early access” here refers to FiveM for GTAV Enhanced, not to GTA V Enhanced itself. Rockstar’s base Enhanced edition is a full release; the limitation is FiveM’s client support phase.

Server-side notes

  • Enhanced servers require the Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable and use a renamed server binary (cfx-server.exe instead of FXServer.exe).
  • Legacy servers keep the original FXServer.exe workflow.
  • Because Enhanced uses Infinity OneSync only, large-population servers generally run on Enhanced; smaller community servers may stay on Legacy.

These are server-owner concerns, but they explain why a server you join may require one build over the other. Official Legacy vs Enhanced · Checked October 20, 2026.

Which one should you use?

Own Enhanced, no graphic mods?

Use Enhanced. You get the newer build, Infinity OneSync and the latest gamebuild. Most big roleplay servers are moving here.

Want Reshade / NVE / visual mods?

Use Legacy for now. Enhanced blocks graphic mods during early access.

Older PC or unsure?

Legacy is the safer default; it supports older builds and more hardware.

Server tells you which build?

Match the server. If it runs Enhanced, launch FiveM through the Rockstar Games Launcher with your Enhanced copy.

The free FiveM client (Steam app 2676230) launches whichever build your installed GTA V provides; the deciding factor is the GTA V edition you own, not a separate FiveM setting. SteamDB app 2676230 · Checked October 20, 2026.

Individual servers publish their own Enhanced/Legacy compatibility. This page covers the client-side boundary; always check the specific server’s join requirements before assuming a build works.
