Quick answer

Valve's ranked system requires at least 60 wins in Standard Mode. Ranked only lets you select heroes with at least 15 Standard wins, and you need at least three such heroes before you can queue. Calibration lasts eight games and must be played solo; after calibration, Ranked allows solo or eligible duo parties.

Unlock checklist

Ranked uses two separate progress checks. Complete both in Standard Mode before troubleshooting the client.

  1. Win at least 60 Standard matches across your account.
  2. Reach at least 15 Standard wins on each of three or more heroes.
  3. Open Ranked and confirm that at least three eligible heroes can be selected.
  4. Play the eight calibration games solo.

Street Brawl and other modes do not satisfy requirements that Valve specifically labels as Standard wins.

Hero eligibility

Unlocking the queue does not unlock every hero inside it. Ranked only allows a hero after you have 15 Standard wins with that hero. The three-hero minimum prevents a queue with too few valid selections.

Example eligibility check
Standard recordResult
60 account wins; two heroes at 15 winsRanked remains locked because only two heroes qualify.
60 account wins; three heroes at 15 winsThe account meets the published queue requirements.
90 account wins; selected hero has 14 winsThe queue may be available, but that hero is not eligible.

Ranks and subranks

The ladder begins with an uncalibrated label and then runs through eleven named competitive ranks. Every named level has six subranks, I through VI.

Calibration and parties

Your first eight Ranked games are calibration matches and must be played solo. Valve caps the initial placement at Oracle VI. Once calibrated, you may queue solo or as an eligible duo.

  • Normal duos must be within one full rank of each other.
  • Eternus players may only duo with another Eternus player within three subranks.
  • The published rules do not describe Ranked trios or larger parties.

Eternus uses a dynamic rating model, so the fixed guideposts above should not be treated as a complete Eternus formula.

Why Ranked may stay locked

  • The wins came from the wrong mode. Recheck Standard results rather than total matches across every mode.
  • Only the account total is complete. Confirm three separate heroes each have 15 Standard wins.
  • The client has not refreshed. Return to the main menu or restart after the final qualifying win, then read the current lock message.
  • The rule changed after this review. Compare the client wording with Valve's latest announcements before grinding more games.

Outdated rules to ignore

Do not apply the old 2024 ranked schedule to the current queue. Earlier test versions used different access windows and rank handling. The July 30, 2026 Matchmaking Update is the baseline for this page, with later official posts taking priority where they revise a date or condition.

The first season's end was later moved from October 7 to November 5, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. PDT. That revision illustrates why season dates should always be read from the newest announcement rather than copied from the original system post.

How this guide was checked

The source set was checked on October 16, 2026 against Valve's Steam listing, official Deadlock forum, City Never Sleeps page, changelog and Steam announcements; the live roster and news timeline were rechecked on October 17 after Violet became playable. Clearly labelled third-party sources are used only where Valve does not publish a complete beginner rules page or exhaustive interaction reference. Deadlock is still in development, so roster, rules, mechanics and access conditions must be rechecked after major updates.
